ISS Summer Reading

Dear Students & Parents:                                                                                                        June 2017

 

Attached you will find the titles for your required summer reading, as well as directions for one of five projects to complete for your summer reading book. You must read at least ONE book for your upcoming grade level. For example, if you are entering 10th grade, choose a book from the 10th grade list. You must also choose at least ONE project to complete. All books may be borrowed from the public library, purchased at your local bookstore, or on the Internet. We encourage you to read independently. Challenge yourself!

Choose ONE of the following projects to complete for your summer reading book.

  1. Instagram Project

Directions:

You will create at least THREE Instagram pages for ONE of the main characters from the book you have been reading this summer. An Instagram template has been included with your summer reading packet.

Follow the directions below and use the model from Romeo and Juliet as your guide:

Step 1: Identify 1-2 quotes that describe your character. Pay attention to adjectives (describing words) that describe your character. Choose the strongest one and rewrite the quote in the comment section of your Instagram Template.

 

Step 2: Add visuals (you may illustrate images, use pictures from magazines/newspapers/online images

 

Step 3: Create at least 3 hashtags that describe your character

 

Step 4: Create a comment!

 

Step 5: On the back of your template: Write a well-developed paragraph (5-7 complete sentences) in which you explain WHY your hashtag(s) represent your character. Remember to use textual evidence (quotes) from the text to support your response.

 

 

 

Caption: romeo_m: @juliet is the sun.

 

Analysis: This is an example of a metaphor where Romeo compares Juliet to the sun. She is bright and beautiful like the sun; she is "the light of his life." He has never seen anyone as beautiful as Juliet. The reader is now aware that Romeo is in love with her, despite barely knowing her. We also learn that Romeo is an emotional young man.

 Literary Letter

 

As you complete your summer reading, it is important to respond to what you read in order to enhance and reinforce your understanding.  After you choose your book, create a Reading Response Log.

  1. Keep a journal for each novel that you read.
  2. Write a daily Literary Letter in response to each reading, as you will continue to do in class when you return to school in the fall.

If you choose to do the book talk, you MUST include the following:

Character Journal:

 

Write at least 5 substantial (full page) journal entries from the perspective of a major character in your book. At the beginning of each entry, state the name of the featured character and the chapter during or after which the entry would be written. Put yourself in the character’s shoes.  You must include a cover page.  Consider the following questions to get you going:

 

  • What are you most afraid of or worried about at this point in the book?
  • What is making you anxious? Describe the person, object, or event that bothers you.

 

  • Who has impressed, annoyed, or pleased you most so far?

 

  • What other character has had the strongest effect on you? Describe the interaction you've had, and why you feel the way that you do.
  • What lesson(s) have you learned?
  • What have the events that you've been through taught you? How have you changed?

Character: Prim, Chapter 3

 

My head is spinning. The unthinkable has happened. My stomach keeps clenching and unclenching like an angry fist. When I heard my name over the speaker, I felt a paralyzing numbness. My name, one slip of paper among hundreds, got picked? I heard a few gasps around me. People were stunned that a twelve year old had been chosen. The shock was more than some could bear.  A child forced to fight to the death for the cameras. It’s insane.  Those cowards in the Capitol will do anything to keep their control over us. Sometimes I can’t believe that we live like this.  It’s savage, really.

 

Within seconds of the announcement, I heard my sister’s voice. Katniss was pushing her way through the throng, volunteering her life to save mine.  Never in a million years did I expect this turn of events. She didn’t even hesitate. It was not her job to save me. It’s strange that she was willing to sacrifice herself for me, yet I’m angry with her. I cannot bear to watch my sister die, but then neither could she. Even though I am angry I am also so scared at what might happen.   I know she’d do anything to protect me.  I’m hoping that will get her through the Games because I still need her here in District 12. I keep hoping I’ll wake up from this nightmare, but she’s really gone. They took her away so quickly. She’s on her way to the Capitol now, and within days, she’ll be in the arena fighting for her life. Katniss must win. Deep down, I feel that she really will. I don’t know anybody as strong and brave as my sister.  I just wish I would have had the chance to tell her that...not that she needs to hear it from me.   

I don’t care if the District 1 & 2 Tributes have been training their whole lives for this. Katniss will beat them. I truly believe that she can do anything.  I have to believe...it’s the only thing that is keeping me going right now.  She has to win. She just has to.  I don’t know what I would do without her.
