College Application Process Snapshot

9th Grade:
  • Explore self discovery assessments (career interest, personality, skills, and strengths assessments) on Naviance
  • Discuss the importance of rigorous coursework, joining clubs and volunteering in the community.
  • College visits
  • Meet with School Counselor to create 4 year plan and discuss post secondary options
  • Create a professional email
  • Create a high school resume
  • Reminder to complete lunch forms

10th Grade:

  • Continue to look at Naviance and use the system to research schools
  • Conversations with guidance counselors regarding rigorous coursework, joining club and volunteering in the community
  • College Aptitude Electives offered to 10th grade students, Math and ELA to help prepare for SAT exam
  • Continue to build resume
  • College visits
  • PSAT March (Spring)
  • Remind students interested in playing collegiate sports to create free login with NCAA 
  • Reminder to complete lunch forms

11th Grade:

  • Join college & career google classroom
  • Explore careers and colleges of interest on Naviance (Complete Career Interest profiler and the College Supermatch)
  • Research and participate in clubs, after-school/weekend programs, community service and/or extracurricular activities 
  • College Application Process Presentation from the College and Career Office
  • Continue to build resume
  • Fort Shadowing program available in Spring semester
  • Continue to use Naviance start to research and create college list (save in colleges I am thinking about tab)
  • Start to think about requesting letters of recommendation
  • College Visits/Campus Tours
  • Start writing college essay in the Spring semester
  • Attend the Spring College and Career Fair
  • College inquiry class (ELA elective)
  • Take the PSAT National Merit Exam (mid October) Take SAT March 
  • Reminder to complete lunch forms
  • Remind students interested in playing collegiate sports to create free login with NCAA
  • Start researching scholarship, nominate students when applicable
  • Request letters of recommendation from teachers, counselors, mentors, coaches, etc. starting in May/June

12th Grade:

  • Reminder to complete lunch forms
  • Join college & career google classroom
  • Continue visiting colleges for campus tours 
  • Attend the Fall College and Career Fair Night with Parents/Guardians 
  • Fort Shadowing program available in Fall semester
  • College Application Process Presentation from the College and Career Office
  • Finalize college application list (Reach,Target & Safety Schools)
  • Attend the Fall Career Day Event
  • Create a common application
  • Reminder to sign FERPA (Common Application)
  • CUNY Applications completed during free period (usually October)
  • Remind eligible students (typically GPA 92 & higher) to apply for Macaulay Honors
  • SUNY applications usually one week free coincides with CUNY application free period. (Students may complete application either on SUNY or common application)
  • Request letters of recommendation from teachers, counselors, mentors, coaches, etc.
  • Finalize college choices and review with counselor
  • Begin applying to colleges in October
  • Confirm any Early Decision/Early Action applications
  • Retake SAT, ACT and/or SAT subject tests if needed
  • Attend FAFSA Completion Night Event
  • Begin applying for Financial Aid: FAFSA (October-December), TAP, CSS Profile
  • Research and apply for scholarships
  • Receive college acceptances; Compare offers; Accept your college offer, send your deposit
