Writing Policy

Writing in Instructional Support Services

Expectations:  Daily opportunities for writing in Self-Contained and Resource Room classes:

  1.  Written homework, exams and quizzes across the disciplines.  
  2. Written reflection and lesson summary in notebooks across the disciplines.
  3. Journal writing and grammar and usage review in Resource Room classes.
  4. Note-taking strategies (abbreviations, symbols, key words, etc.) in all classes.
  5. Using writing process and rubrics for all writing assignments across the disciplines in all self-contained and Resource Room classes.
  6. Daily writing practice in sentence and paragraph structure and conventions of grammar and usage, word work, incorporating literary techniques and elements in all self-contained English classes, including the use of the Wilson/Rewards Method for reading and writing in Literacy classes.
  7.  Writing projects in all classes including: autobiographies, brochures, book and film reviews, calendars, children’s       illustrated book (used in cross-age tutoring), comic books, commercials, dialogues, interviews, poetry, short stories,        summaries, etc.
  8. Compositions and Essays: expository, argumentative, compare/contrast, literary response, personal narrative, and research papers across the disciplines in self-contained English and Resource Room classes.
  9. Speeches, dialogue, friendly and business letters, explaining directions in paragraph form in self-contained and Resource Room classes.
  10. Regents writing tasks across the disciplines in all self-contained and Resource Room classes.
  11. Argumentative essay including a claim, supporting evidence and counter claim.
