World Language Courses:

 

Students need two language credits to graduate but may complete a three year sequence in order to be eligible to take the LOTE exam and possibly qualify for an Advanced Regents Diploma.

 

3 year track:

First Year Language Courses: Spanish (FSS61/2), French (FFS61/2), Italian (FTS61/2) During this first year of language study, students will learn the basic grammatical structures of language through carefully planned thematic units. They will practice reading, writing, listening and speaking in the target language while studying culture.

 

Second Year Language Courses: Spanish (FSS63/4), French (FFS63/4), Italian (FTS63/4)

This course is for students who have completed the first year of language study.

Students enrolled in this class will not only continue to learn how to speak, read and write, they will also be exposed to culture.

 

Third Year Language Courses: Spanish (FSS65/6), French (FFS65/6), Italian (FTS65/6)

This course is for students who took the first two years of a world language course. Students in this class will not only continue to learn the language and will continue to be immersed in culture through various topics of study. This course culminates in the LOTE Exam.

 

1 year track:

Students programmed for these classes are not on track for the three year language sequence and will not be eligible to take the LOTE exam or qualify for an Advanced Regents Diploma.

 

Conversational Chinese (FMS21QC)- In this one year survey course, students will learn some basic conversational structures of language through carefully planned thematic units. In addition, they will explore the culture of China through various topics of study.

 

Conversational Spanish (FSS21QC)- In this one year survey course, students will learn some basic conversational structures of language through carefully planned thematic units. In addition, they will explore the culture of Spanish speaking countries through various topics of study.

 

Home Language Arts:

Home Language Arts classes are for English Language Learners who are enrolled in a Transitional Bilingual Education (TBE) Program.

 

First Year HLA Courses: Arabic (FAS61/2QN), Spanish (FSS61/2QN), Chinese (FMS61/2QN) During this first year of home language study, students will learn the basic grammatical structures of language through carefully planned thematic units. They will practice reading, writing, listening and speaking in the home language. Students will also participate in the Chinese Reading Test and the Spanish Reading Test (EL Examen de Lectura) annually.

 

Second Year HLA Courses: Arabic (FAS63/4QN),  Spanish (FSS63/4QN), Chinese (FMS63/4QN) This course is for students who have completed the first year HLA language study. Students enrolled in this class will continue to speak, read and write in the home language. Students will also participate in the Chinese Reading Test and the Spanish Reading Test (EL Examen de Lectura) annually.

 

Third Year HLA Courses: Spanish (FSS65/6QN), Chinese (FMS65/6QN)

This course is for students who took the first two years of a HLA course. Students in this class will continue to hone home language skills and will also be immersed in the culture through various topics of study. This course culminates in the LOTE Exam. Students will also participate in the Chinese Reading Test and the Spanish Reading Test (EL Examen de Lectura) annually.

 

ADVANCED PLACEMENT COURSE OFFERINGS

CHINESE/SPANISH  

Description:  Students in AP Chinese and AP Spanish receive a single period of instruction in advanced language, culture and literature.  Credits gained by passing the Advanced Placement exam with a score of 3 or higher are accepted by many colleges.  
Criteria:  
The AP Chinese and Spanish classes are for students who have completed all three levels of language and have taken and passed the LOTE exam.  In order to take AP Chinese or Spanish, students must demonstrate a commitment to the study of higher level language and culture and demonstrate the ability to manage the demands of the course. In order to be approved by the Assistant Principal for placement in the course students must:
  • Successfully complete six credits of LOTE
  • Receive the recommendation of their LOTE teacher
  • Demonstrate mastery through the score of 90 or higher in LOTE coursework and on the corresponding LOTE exam.
    Course Requirements/Expectations: In these courses, students will use authentic Chinese/Spanish materials and sources to develop language skills in multiple modes of communication, including two-way interactions in both writing and speaking; interpretation of audio, audiovisual, and print materials; and oral and written presentation of information and ideas.
  • Students are expected to:
  • Engage in spoken interpersonal communication;
  • Engage in written interpersonal communication;
  • Comprehend information from a variety of audio, visual, and audiovisual resources;
  • Plan, product, and present spoken presentational communications, and
  • Plan and produce written communications.
  • All students must take the Advanced Placement Chinese or the Advanced Placement Spanish exam to earn
