MARTIAL ARTS

Students will learn basic skills and rules of Martial Arts.  They will participate in a variety of conditioning exercises and drills to improve skills. Advanced skills and teamwork will be emphasized during the final third of the class, when students will also learn more advanced skills.

 

POLAR BEAR

This is a Physical Education class that helps the overcrowding in the school.  Since we do not have enough gymnasiums, the students report outside everyday, weather permitting.  Throughout the term, there is skills teaching and performance in small groups for each activity.  Students will be introduced to a variety of physical activities: basketball; football; soccer; softball, volleyball, wiffleball and kickball.

 

 

BASEBALL

 Students will learn basic skills and rules of the game.  They will participate in a variety of conditioning exercises and drills to improve skills.  Advanced skills and teamwork will be emphasized during the final third of the class, when students will also learn umpiring skills.

 

 ULTIMATE WORKOUT

Course combines step aerobics, high and low impact aerobics, zumba, strength training, abdominal strength, cardio (high & low intensity), high intensity interval training and calisthenics.  Students will learn how to calculate target heart rate and Basic Body Index.  Emphasis will be placed on the importance of warm-up and cool down, as well as the development of lifetime fitness plans.  The course culminates with a group or individual routine choreographed by the students and performed for the class.

 

 FLAG FOOTBALL

Students will learn basic skills and rules of the game.  They will participate in a variety of conditioning exercises and drills to improve skills.  Advanced skills and teamwork will be emphasized during the final third of the class, when students will also set up in a game situation with plays.

 

 SOCCER (CO-ED)

Course teaches basic skills and drills for conditioning and game play.  Students will learn individual and team skills and strategies.  Emphasis will be placed on the rules of soccer and sportsmanship.  They will also research community soccer associations and places to continue playing after graduation.

   

GOLF

Students will learn basic skills necessary to play a game of golf.  Basic strokes are practiced indoors.  When the weather permits, the class moves outside for actual play.  Students learn rules, etiquette and sportsmanship.  Class concludes with a trip to the golf range.

 

 HANDBALL

Students will learn basic skills necessary to play a game of handball.  Rules and regulations are covered on rainy days indoors.  When the weather permits, the class moves outside for actual court play.  Students learn rules, etiquette and sportsmanship.  A doubles tournament concludes the class.

 

 PADDLEBALL/BADMINTON

Students will learn basic skills necessary to play a game of tennis, paddleball and badminton.  Basic strokes are practiced indoors.  When the weather permits, the class moves outside for actual court play.  Students learn rules, etiquette and sportsmanship.  An Intra class doubles tournament concludes the class.

 

 BEGINNING/INTERMEDIATE SWIMMING

 Students will learn basic swimming strokes and water safety.

 

YOGA

Students will develop and participate in Yoga activities in which include asana sequences.  They will learn the concepts of Yoga and Holistic health.

  

LIFE GUARDING

American Red Cross Life Guard Training.  Prepares students for Red Cross Life Guard certification.  Rescue skills including first aid, CPR and the use of an external defibrillator are included.

 

 WEIGHT TRAINING

Students will learn how to use various types of conditioning machines and equipment.  They will learn how to build muscle mass and increase strength.  They will learn the function and location of various muscles in the body and how to isolate each in specific exercises.  Special attention will be given to safety and health considerations.  Students will be able to develop their own personal fitness plan based on personal needs.

  

SURVEY (BOYS & GIRLS)

This is the first Physical Education class a student takes at Fort Hamilton High School.  This course acclimates the student to the facilities as well as the expectations in the Physical Education department.  Throughout the term, the student will be introduced to a variety of physical activities:  physical fitness, football, volleyball, basketball, soccer, team handball and floor hockey.

  

MEDICAL EXCUSED P.E.

 Students who cannot participate in regular Physical Education classes due to medical reasons.  Students will learn the rules and regulations of many games, while doing activities that develop their eye/hand coordination, emphasizing each students abilities and improvement rather than their limitations.

  

HEALTH

Course covers various health issues, including decision-making, nutrition, substance abuse (drugs, tobacco, alcohol), human sexuality, parenting and disease prevention.  Students are required to do a term research project and participate in class discussions.

 

VOLLEYBALL (CO-ED)

Development of skills such as serve, forearm pass, set, spike and block.  Students will learn the rules and officiating skills.  Individual skills and team strategy will be practices in game situations.  Class tournaments will lead up to an all-star tournament between classes.

  

BASKETBALL (BOYS & GIRLS)

Students will learn the basic dribbling, passing and shooting skills.  They will learn the rules of basketball and basic team offense and defense strategy.  Students will also learn basic officiating techniques.  Various drills, lead up games as well as a culminating class tournament will provide students with the opportunity to improve skills.

 

 ROLLER BLADING

 Roller blading for both fun and fitness.  Skills include forward and backward skating, starting and stopping, skating in pairs and playing a variety of games on skates.  This gives students the opportunity to improve balance and fitness.

 

 SOFTBALL

Students will learn basic skills and rules of the game.  They will participate in a variety of conditioning exercises and drills to improve skills.  Advanced skills and teamwork will be emphasized during the final third of the class, when students will also learn umpiring skills.
